More NASCAR Foolishness

These thugs fight on the track and when they’re not fighting they’re running into each other because they are poor sports. NASCAR should be banned.

UPDATE: Shortly after a disintegrating NASCAR vehicle spewed debris into the crowd, a spectator uploaded a terrifying clip of the accident and the aftermath to YouTube. But the clip was suddenly removed with the message, “This video contains content from NASCAR, who has blocked it on copyright grounds.”

The removal sparked disbelief from journalists — including myself — who wondered if NASCAR’s quick response was motivated by protecting its image rather than protecting its copyright. Then NASCAR responded with an unusual justification.

“The fan video of the wreck on the final lap of today’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race was blocked on YouTube out of respect for those injured in today’s accident,” explained NASCAR in a statement to The Verge. “Information on the status of those fans was unclear and the decision was made to err on the side of caution with this very serious incident.”

Hat Tip to Lost Remote. I repeat. NASCAR is a thuggish plague on racing. From the way they run the business to the hooligans who drive the cars, it’s a disgrace.

  1. Many NASCAR fans don’t even consider races at Daytona and Talladega to be real racing because it’s more about dumb luck than skill. It is not a reflection of the rest of the season.

You call NASCAR thuggish, but are they any more to blame than IndyCar is for the death of Dan Wheldon? People were criticizing the decision to have a Indy race at Las Vegas long before they got there, yet they did it anyway.

It’s racing. Accidents will happen. All racers are competitive. I pray that all of the fans affected make a full recovery, but if racing fans don’t want to risk the danger, they don’t have to go to the race.

    • Mike your comment borders on absurd. “If racing fans don’t want to risk the danger, they don’t have to go to the race.”

So if your kids get killed in a bank robbery, would you say “Well they didn’t have to go to the bank?” If your wife gets killed by a defective firearm would you say “Well she didn’t have to buy a gun?”

And you making hay off Danny’s death is repugnant. There was nothing similar about the circumstances – nothing. Dan’s was a true racing accident. The accident at Daytona was caused because the guy in second wasn’t going to let the guy in first win. So if he couldn’t win he was going to push the winner out of the way. Trailer trash at its best. NASCAR is a disgrace. It’s not racing. It is to racing what the old WWF was to sports.

NASCAR has an obligation to protect the fans – something several lawyers will no doubt make sure it understands fully when this is all said and done. If the thugs who drive these cars didn’t use them as weapons – this accident wouldn’t have happened. And if Daytona had listened to the numerous warnings about fan proximity to the track – maybe some of these people would be unhurt.

  2. Deliberately caused CRASHES (they are in no way ‘accidents’) are criminal. Castigate him, fine him, ban him, sue him into oblivion. And I’m not a suing kinda person.
